| Cells are programmed to respond to external signals. When a cell is damaged, it is genetically programmed to respond by healing itself. This response is powered by mitochondria, small powerhouses within the cell which energize the cell. Mitochondria produce a high-energy molecule called ATP, which a cell needs to function correctly. Light therapy of a certain, specific wavelength stimulates the mitochondria to make more ATP. This helps the cell to heal itself from the inside, and prevents cell death.
